Catalonia concentrates much of the innovative talent of Spain, a study by the Catalan Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise reports. One out of four companies working on innovation has its base in Catalonia and nearly 40% (38.75%) of all European patents requested by the Spanish government come from Catalonia. Catalonia is also a national leader in research and development (R&D) and concentrates 22.52% of companies working on innovation (11,129). Between 1996 and 2006, spending in R&D has tripled to 2.6 billion euros, with pharmaceutical projects showing most of the activity.
