Recent Investments

Catalonia's Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and Spain's Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) are to set up in Barcelona the new Institute for Evolutionary Biology (IBE). The new center is to be devoted to the research on biological evolution and biodiversity.

The IBE is the first joint effort of UPF and CSIC and will integrate two units currently under the supervision of scientists Xavier Bellés and Jaume Bertranpetit. Both experts are to coordinate 14 research groups. Evolutionary biology is an interdisciplinary field and studies the processes and mechanisms that generate biodiversity, one of the most important scientific challenges of this century.
