Lleida promotes itself as Southern Europe's agricultural capitalLleida is to be home to Catalonia's first center for the study of the fruit production chain. The initiative, known as FruitCentre, plans to cover all the processes involved in the fruit sector, from genetic improvement of the crops to distribution to consumers.
Fruitcentre has received an investment of 3.6 billion euros from the Institute of Agricultural Research and Technology (IRTA), and has the support of the Catalan government, the Lleida City Hall and the University of Lleida. It will also create 126 jobs, including 40 researchers.
The facilities will occupy 4,000 square meters at Lleida's new Center for Agricultural and Food Research, offering 20 labs, fruit sorting machines, and refrigerated storage.
