Barcelona Port Authority to start a railway service between Lyon and BarcelonaBarcelona Port Authority is to start a freight train service from Barcelona to Lyon, France, to transport goods arriving in the Catalan capital's port. The service, which is expected to start on February 8th 2009, will take between nine and ten hours.
The initiative is part of Barcelona's efforts to compete with Genoa and Marseille in order to become Southern Europe's new gateway for Asian products. The train service will initially use the Iberian gauge tracks until the new high-speed rails linking Catalonia with France are finished in 2011.
