German multinational company Volkswagen has announced that it is to use its Barcelona facilities to produce the new Q3 model for its Audi subsidiary, a move that promises to increase the potential of the Martorell plant. We have chosen Barcelona "because of the efficiency of our Spanish unit, the high quality of its production activity and the workers' qualifications," Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler said.

The new Q3 project is to receive an investment of 300 million Euros and will start production in Martorell in 2011 "following all Audi quality standards", the company said. Initial production is expected to be around 20,000 units.
