
In Catalonia, extensive road and rail networks effectively connect industrial centres and cities and also provide access to the rest of Europe and the world.
The metropolitan area of Barcelona, contains the port, the airport and most of the logistics facilities within a radius of 10 km from the city centre.
Barcelona airport is the second most important airport in Spain in terms of cargo and has been named Best European cargo airport in 2009.
The Port of Barcelona is one of the main ports on the Mediterranean and in Southern Europe. Specialized in general cargo and goods with high added value, it is leader on the Mediterranean in traffic of vehicles. All modes of transport are available within a radius of 5 km of the Port and there is also a 259-ha Logistics Activity Area. It has 313 regular lines to 423 destinations. It is also the leading cruise-ship destination on the Mediterranean and second in the world, with 2,075,000 people on cruise ships in 2008.
There are important synergies between Port and Airport facilities near the city, each with global connectivity. Barcelona is one of the few cities in Southern Europe with this concentration (all modes of transport) and the only one in Spain.
The Port of Tarragona is the largest port in Southern Europe for chemical products, accounting for 60% of total cargo traffic.
Reus and Girona are among the airports in Spain that have increased the most in terms of the number of passengers and operations in the last few years. Together, they provide service to more than 20 international destinations. Lleida-Alguaire airport has been open recently.
Catalonia has the highest number of logistics centres of any Spanish region, with a total of 17. Including public and private initiatives, there is a total area of 1,112 ha dedicated to logistics uses. Of this area, 300 ha is in the Barcelona metropolitan area, namely the Logistics Activities Area (ZAL), the Zona Franca Logistics Park and ProLogis.
