The ranking of European cities of the future by the FDI Magazine places Barcelona in fifth place, behind just London, Paris, Moscow and Stockholm, in a list on which 223 European cities appear.
Cities are classed according to their population and geographical location, and the ranking is made by a team of specialists based on a hundred indicators. Aspects considered include economic potential, costs, human resources, quality of life, infrastructures, promotion strategies to attract foreign investment and business aids and incentives.
Barcelona, Frankfurt and Edinburgh are the only cities in the top ten that are not capitals of state.
In 2009, the Financial Times published a special on Barcelona highlighting such infrastructures as the port, the organisation of international trade fairs, the IESE and ESADE business schools and future sectors such as biotechnology and design.
