Catalonia and Barcelona
Catalonia has a prime location on the shores of the Mediterranean. Excellent communications make it an ideal crossroads between Europe, Latin America, North Africa and The Middle East.
The Port of Barcelona is among the top European ports in terms of vehicle traffic and specialises in handling high added value goods. It brings together the largest offer of logistics and transport services in the Iberian Peninsula and Southern Europe. With more than 2.5 million passengers it is also the Mediterranean's number one cruise destination and the fifth most important port in the world for cruise ship.
Tarragona is the largest port in Southern Europe for chemical products, accounting for 60% of total cargo traffic.
Barcelona's new airport handles over 30 million passengers a year with flights to 150 destinations in Europe, Africa, America and the Middle East. It was ranked Best Airport in Southern Europe at the 2011 World Airport Awards. The airport is also a key cargo centre. In 2010, it handled 277,832 flight operations and 104,280 tonnes of cargo. It was named Best European cargo airport in 2009.
Barcelona is one of the few cities in Southern Europe with all modes of transport (port, airport, motorways, railway) interconnected within a 5-kilometre radius, each of them with global connectivity.
