Employment system

In Spain the minimum working age is 16. The minimum wage is fixed on a yearly basis and stands at 633.30 Euros a month for 2010, with 14 monthly payments a year. The negotiated general wages agreements set the minimum wage for each sector, the hours worked a year and how they are distributed.

It is compulsory for workers to be registered with the Social Security System. Social Security contributions are made by the employer and worker proportionally according to the employment and professional category. Employers' contributions include contingencies for work-related accidents and professional illness. For 2010, contributions or general payment by the employer stands at 29.9% and by the worker at 6.35%. Both figures are calculated on maximum and minimum bases which vary according to the worker's category.

There are benefits in terms of rebates to reduce employers' Social Security contributions for specific groups. These rebates may be in the form of a percentage of the salary costs or fixed monthly discounts.

Contracts may be permanent or temporary.
