The mission of the new technology-based companies fostering programme consists of designing and developing the necessary support programmes to help in the generation and growth of new technology-based companies in Catalonia.
Technology-based companies work on intensive application of scientific and technical knowledge to produce goods/services, with an edge over existing products on the market. They are defined by the following characteristics:
- High growth potential.
- Promotional team linked to the field of research, universities, technology centres or organisations in the scientific-technical environment.
- Focus on the global market (high internationalisation potential).
- Own technology, intellectual or industrial property, patents, competitive advantages.
- Creation of highly qualified jobs.
- High scalability (strong operational leverage).
The generation process of this type of company is more complex than that of less innovative companies for a number of reasons, which include the high number of agents taking part in their creation and that have to be coordinated, and the high technological risk (economical) that they take on owing to the uncertainty accompanying any line of research and development compared with the results.
