Rob Surgical Systems – a new spin off from the Biomedical engineering Research Centre, (CREB)

Rob Surgical Systems, a spin-off from TECNIO partner centre the CREB, (a faculty of Barcelona’s Polytechnic University), is now receiving support from the medical management of the prestigious American Mayo Clinic from Phoenix, as it continues to further its search for partners to broaden its presence on the market.

Rob Surgical Systems, set up in 2011, specialises in robotic surgery. The firm manufactures robotic systems for use in minimally invasive surgery techniques, which have been developed following key research by the group in recent years.

The first product spawned from research work is the Bitrak; a multi-arm, remotely-operated, robotic surgery station, which provides a number of advantages over existing equipment available on the market, not least because it takes up less space in the OR. It also boasts a computer-assisted modelling system, which enables it to adapt to the needs of a given patient, therefore reducing the time it takes to become operative. All this adds up to the possibility that more operations can be carried out in a single theatre, making spaces more cost effective.

3D from Imm Sound, a new “immersive sound”

Imm Sound, a start-up company at the Barcelona Media Centre d’Innovació, (a member of the TECNIO network), has developed a new “immersive sound” technology, which it has called 3D Imm Sound. This new development has been devised for use in cinemas and other major public venues, and it is already being fitted in multiplexes across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Imm Sound is aiming for 3D Imm Sound to become a benchmark for the industry in the future. It is compatible with all types of image being projected on the market at present and its developers are also working on creating a type of audio sound reproduction that can be used in the home, in video games and even in vehicles.

The CEO of Imm Sound, Vicente López, explains that the “immersive medium” reproduces the acoustic field with a hyper accurate definition, which means that the cinemas manage to produce a sound so natural it practically mimics reality, thereby offering filmgoers a “three dimensional sound experience.” “The sound that comes out is natural, just as if you were really present in the location projected, as it is not fed into channels like before. López uses the example of being in a downpour, saying that “listening with this technology makes you feel it is so real you almost feel you’re getting wet.”
