Catalonia, third in EU scientific excellence rankings
Catalonia is to draft its own law on science this year, in order to ensure a fuller protective umbrella for research excellence within the territory.
Current figures underline Catalan leadership in the field with a total of 1,297 research units and 8 benchmark networks operating with 23,500 researchers. All in all, some 42.500 people work in research development and innovation in Catalonia, approximately 1.5% of the entire working population.
According to EU statistics, Catalonia’s scientific output is ten times greater than the per capita average for the region, and accounts for half of all research grants provided by the European Research Council for Spain, (third in the EU in receipt of grants per million inhabitants). Furthermore, it doubles the European average for funding given to top researchers.
Based on the number of projects of excellence funded by the European Research Council per head of population, Catalonia has now risen to a hypothetical third place in the ranking of scientific excellence in the EU, behind only the Netherlands and Sweden. The major challenge still lying ahead for research work in Catalonia is for enterprise to put its weight firmly behind innovation. From the standpoint of the public sector, there is a firm desire to act in every way possible to assist in furnishing businesses with updated technology, as well as to provide them with professionals to help further strategic technological development that should lead to Catalan enterprise becoming more competitive in the mid-term. In order to achieve this objective, the Catalan government will roll out a series of initiatives to nurture scientific research in order for it to eventually bear fruit on the economic front.
TECNIO is the brand created by ACC1Ó which brings together the leading experts in applied research and technology transfer in Catalan enterprise. TECNIO enjoys the close collaboration of over 100 specialist associates, that detect the needs of companies and puts the technological capability of the Catalan business network at their disposal.
